Incense is still burned in its purest form in much of the world. The sap of the frankincense tree is gathered in the form of hardened granules from cuts in the bark of the tree. Similarly, myrrh, which means bitter, is collected from the sap of its tree. These granules are placed on lit charcoal briquettes and release their scent which has been known from times immemorial. Traditionally burned to welcome guests and at important celebrations, it is still used in the same way today.
